and a little sugar to cut the taste
husband and wife

so I am a mother
at a table
with everything I need
the paper
a coffee
and a serrated spoon
for cutting perfect pieces
of my grapefruit

Bathroom Window

brushing my teeth
in a dark bathroom
by the light
falling through
the open door
it seems as if
I am looking
into my neighbors
lit bedroom
across the alley.

I wait quietly in the dark
for several minutes
until it comes to me
that I am watching
the reflection
of my own bedroom
in my bathroom window.
